Soroptimist International of Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District was originally chartered in 1947.

Soroptimists are women from a wide range of backgrounds who are interested in local, regional, national and international matters. We like to help others and we like to enjoy doing this.

We support: and have supported in the past:
      Locally
  • Women's refuge
  • Barnardos
  • Cancer Bridge
  • The People's Kitchen

          Regionally

  • Project Independence for women survivors of war
  • DEWODE (Dedicated Women in Development), in Uganda working to build and equip a clinic.

     Nationally
  • Landmine awareness
  • Mother and baby tetanus appeal.
  • Education of Girls

            Internationally
  • Project Independence
  • Women survivors of war
  • Aquaboxes
  • The  Vietnamese 'Dust for Life' . This was the international president's appeal.
  • End Child Exploitation

We manage to support charity, increase our awareness of topical and important issues, advocate for change and also to have a lot of fun.

XVIII SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION 2007 – UNITY OF PURPOSE; DIVERSITY IN ACTION – GLASGOW

It was my very great privilege and honour to have been able to attend my first International Convention in the company of 1,500 fellow Soroptimist’s, from all the corners of the world.
It was a great honour to see our own Margaret Alderson on the stage introducing the winning International Programme Action Projects.
This was Margaret’s last International board meeting as Assistant Director for Programme Action and she received a standing ovation from all the Board members in recognition of her work for Programme Action and her chairship of the International Convention Local Committee.
How lucky are we to have such an inspirational Soroptimist in our Club and I know that you join me in wishing her the heartiest congratulations for all her service and dedication.
Please come to the Business meeting on the 10th September and hear first hand from Margaret and myself about our experiences at the XVIII International Convention.
